Source Code Session #5: Let's Chat: Building Personalized Chatbot Activities for Any Classroom
LIMITED
Limited Capacity seats available
The morning "Let's Chat" AI chatbot session will focus on AI Literacy and help provide an overview of varying levels and methods by which AI chatbots may provide scaffolded and collaborative learning opportunities to students who have grown up in the technical age. Students today have access to information faster than ever before. They are accustomed to—and demand—immediate feedback. AI chatbots are especially designed for digital collaboration. By using AI chatbots proactively, with guardrails incorporated by educators, students will learn new content and critical thinking skills simultaneously through creative, relevant, and engaging lessons.

After engaging in the Let's Chat session, participants will be able to build upon current AI Literacy and explore the potential for using AI chatbots to enhance instruction, digital collaboration, student motivation, and engagement.

Source Code Session #7: How to get students to think critically about AI
LIMITED
Limited Capacity seats available
The increasingly pervasive use of AI in popular online platforms frequented by adolescents has researchers worried about how this technology affects their online privacy and security. It also has teachers worried about how this technology affects classroom work and student learning. In this session, we will first present an overview of our CyberEd project, in which we designed and developed six education modules around AI-related cybersecurity topics that were implemented by Computer Science and Mathematics teachers in their 6th-8th grade classrooms. We will then dive into more details about the contents of one of these modules. Finally, we will provide an overview of our plans for "CyberEd 2.0" and extend the audience an invitation to join us for that project.

Expansion Pack Session #5X (Part 1): Building Personalized Chatbot Activities for Any Classroom
LIMITED
Limited Capacity seats available
The Let's Chat Expansion Pack Workshop will provide educators with practical strategies for customizing AI chatbots to facilitate AI Competency. Educators will be equipped to utilize AI chatbots, specifically MagicSchool AI, as a collaborative tool for both educators and students to better understand how educational chatbots are useful and relevant in the 21st Century classroom. Participants will apply strategies discussed in the morning session to actual lessons and be able to customize a generic chatbot for use as an instructional tool. Individualization of chatbots for all age levels and subjects will be further addressed. No coding is required—instead, the focus will be on designing lessons that utilize AI chatbots as a collaborative tool to facilitate metacognitive thinking. Practical lessons will be demonstrated and created during the sessions that encourage students to reflect, ask questions, and attain ownership of their thinking processes while practicing self-directed learning.

FILLING
Tuesday July 14, 2026 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
Limited Capacity filling up
In this hands-on session, educators will explore IBM SkillsBuild through Discovery Education and learn how to navigate courses that build foundational AI and digital skills with confidence. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of AI concepts, digital literacy, responsible use, and workforce-aligned skills that can support both teacher learning and student readiness.

This session will also lay the foundation for the afternoon Expansion Pack Workshop, where educators will apply what they learned to classroom instruction. Educators will use their new AI knowledge to determine when AI is the right tool, how AI can increase rigor, and how AI can provide additional supports or accommodations for students as they design lessons for their own subject areas and grade levels.

In this interactive afternoon workshop, educators will move from awareness to application by exploring research-based Discovery Education SOS Instructional Strategies that can be used across grade levels and content areas. Participants will work collaboratively to develop, curate, adapt, and practice strategies they can immediately implement in their classrooms.

Educators will first explore high-impact instructional strategies that work with or without AI, then examine how AI can be used intentionally to increase rigor, support accommodations, extend student thinking, and create more responsive learning experiences. Using knowledge from the morning session, participants will design or adapt classroom-ready lessons for their own subject areas while determining when AI adds value and when strong instructional strategy alone is enough.

Educators will leave with:

5–7 practical instructional strategies they can use for engagement, discussion, collaboration, and formative assessmentA stronger understanding of when AI can meaningfully support instructionA classroom-ready plan for using AI to increase rigor, support student needs, and strengthen learning

This session equips educators to address key limitations of AI tools, including bias and hallucination, often caused by reliance on uncontrolled or unreliable sources. It provides participants with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to guide AI toward generating insights from curated, reliable, and controlled resources.    Participants will begin by comparing open- and closed-source AI tools, developing a clear understanding of their strengths, limitations, and appropriate use cases. They will then explore two project examples created with a closed-source platform such as Google NotebookLM, examining how these models can be adapted for technology and engineering classroom contexts. Next, participants will develop their own project and resource library on a topic of personal or curricular relevance, emphasizing organization, content curation, and instructional design. By the end of the session, educators will leave with a project in progress and a practical framework for selecting and applying AI tools in teaching.

Source Code Session #18: A House Divided? Thoughts on Social Studies and AI in the Classroom
LIMITED
Wednesday July 15, 2026 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
Limited Capacity seats available
Is Social Studies in danger of being left behind in an ever-expanding AI world? As institutions push for rapid adoption, both educators and students are becoming wary of "AI slop"—generic, uncritical content that threatens to water down deep learning. This "boots-on-the-ground" session for Grade 6-12 educators moves beyond the hype to ask the hard questions: Do we actually need these tools, and how do we keep them from becoming a permanent crutch?

We will explore practical, guardrailed methods that use AI to spark historical inquiry and civil discourse without replacing the vital work of reading, writing, and analysis. Participants will discover strategies to maintain student critical thinking and traditional learning techniques while navigating modern technology. Learn how to implement ethical "human-in-the-loop" workflows that treat AI as a starting point, not the final word. Join us to ensure that in an age of automation, the human heart of Social Studies remains protected, rigorous, and relevant.

The afternoon workshop will function as a hands-on design lab where participants adapt the ideas from the morning session into a classroom-ready resource. We will begin with a brief recap and discussion of how students may already be using AI as a shortcut, then examine sample resources such as AI comparison activities, verification checklists, reflection prompts, and student-facing protocols. These examples will be explored collaboratively, with attention to how they can be adapted across grade levels.

Participants will then select an existing lesson, assignment, problem set, lab, or project and redesign it to include structured, responsible AI use. Most of the workshop will be devoted to creation, peer feedback, revision, and facilitator support. Participants will focus on questions such as what students should do before using AI, how they should evaluate AI output, and what evidence they should use to justify agreement or disagreement. The workshop will culminate with participants sharing an adapted resource or implementation plan they can use when they return to school.

After each 30-minute period, the groups will present their results, including problems they may foresee. The groups will then move to a different topic, with the understanding that the new group would develop totally new ideas. At the end of three rounds of this, the entire workshop would consider the larger problems from these three areas and how we might negotiate those issues.

The workshop will divide participants into three groups (instructor tools, student tools, and curriculum design) and spend 30-40 minutes creating resources and developing ideas based on the morning sessions. After each 30-minute period, the groups will present their results, including problems they may foresee. The groups will then move to a different topic, with the understanding that the new group would develop totally new ideas. At the end of three rounds of this, the entire workshop would consider the larger problems from these three areas and how we might negotiate those issues.
